Abstract

Las Meninas is the masterpiece of Diego Velazquez. The painting depicts a Gunda palace studio, with a total of 11 figures. The painting’s focus is on the Spanish Princess Margaret, the youngest daughter of Philip IV. With Las Meninas' complex compositions, dubious subject matter, and fine detail Velazquez's mastery of painting is apparent. The painting's innovation of the court portrait form, through the inclusion of the artist himself in the painting, leads to not simply a serious portrait, but also elevated his own courtly status and influence. Velazquez's creation of multiple spaces in Las Meninas, the sense of interaction with the viewer, detailed brushstrokes, and the use of details has brought about endless speculation and inspired the realist and impressionist painters of the 19th century.

Through Las Meninas, Velazquez's most significant achievements are his communication to the audience through both the use of comparison and unrealism. First, through the viewer’s comparison of different characters, lighting, brush strokes, and scenes in paintings, Velazquez utilizes juxtaposition and comparison to engage the audience. Secondly, through the stark contrast of realism and unrealism, Velazquez uses a realistic "gaze", the presentation of details, and sudden unrealism to communicate.
