Abstract

This article analyzes the potential motivations and known impacts of Chinese agricultural aid to Mozambique. As China has received criticism for its heightened interest in Mozambique’s agricultural sector after the global food crisis in 2007, this article sets out to answer the question of what China’s true motivations are in providing agricultural aid to Mozambique despite their domestic food security issues. One of the evidence this paper puts forward is China’s declining arable land as, among other things, their motivation to exert greater influence over agricultural projects overseas. The findings suggest that China is motivated by both food security and political relationship-building reasons in the interest of both countries, and that the impacts are so far beneficial for Mozambique.
