Abstract

As the second largest economy in the world, China is ranked 66th out of 180 countries ranked by Transparency International with the Corruption Perceptions Index. Due to the clandestine nature of corruption, it is arduous to generate concrete statistical analyses of corruption, and the most accessible data that reflect corruption base their results on perceptions of corruption. Our research utilizes multiple published indices to analyze the effectiveness and development of Chinese President Xi Jingping’s anti-corruption efforts. Despite the potential biases of the data caused by participants’ level of education, Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP), occasionally inconsistent policies, and potential manipulation through social media, this research is capable of presenting a comprehensive analysis towards existing data and CCP’s anti-corruption effort. Our findings suggest that the various investigated indices reflect that people perceive that China has become less corrupt over the last decade. However, China is still far from corruption-free.
